Beschreibung

The current research project has been focused on the study through several analytical techniques of a set of paint samples supplied by Golden Manufactory (USA), cast in 2012. The multi-analytical approach adopted allowed to obtain information regarding the chemical nature of their formulations and the interactions between pigments and binders. The first GC-MS procedure used to analyse them gave information regarding, above all, oxidation processes and its products, giving an overview on the interactions of one pigment on the other. Even if Golden manufactory declared that only pigment and oil must be present inside the colours used, several "extra" compounds were found. Among them, metal soaps. Being the distinction between metal soaps intentionally added in paint formulation, as metal stearates used as dispersing agents, and metal soaps formed during the drying process rather difficult, a second GC-MS procedure was used (Two steps derivatisation method) in order to highlight if fatty acids detected were present as free fatty acids or as metal carboxylates.
